The brains are remarkable machines, capable of processing vast amounts of information every second. Yet, they are not perfect mirrors of reality. Instead, they filter and interpret the world around us through a lens shaped by biology, past experiences, and personal values. This filtering process helps us make quick decisions but also leads to cognitive biases that influence how we perceive and believe what we see.
How Our Brain Processes Information
The brain operates under biological constraints. Neurons communicate through electrical signals, but these signals must reach a certain threshold before triggering a response. This means the brain does not process every detail equally. Instead, it prioritizes information that aligns with what it expects or values most.
When new information arrives, it first passes through our sensory system, which encodes the evidence. Before this evidence influences our decisions or beliefs, the brain compares it to an internal threshold. If the evidence is strong enough to cross this threshold, we update our beliefs. If not, we tend to interpret the information as consistent with what we already think.
This system is efficient and conserves energy, allowing us to make fast decisions without being overwhelmed by every detail. However, it also leads to a tendency known as confirmatory bias—the habit of favoring information that supports our existing beliefs and dismissing evidence that contradicts them.
Why Bias Is Not Just Stubbornness
It's easy to think that bias stems from stubbornness or a closed mind. However, it naturally results from how the brain evaluates new information against existing beliefs and priorities. Our preferences and motivations influence our perception of the world.
For instance, two individuals might share the same belief about a political issue but hold different values or priorities. These differences lead their brains to set varying thresholds for accepting new evidence. Consequently, they interpret the same information differently and may develop even more divergent opinions.
This clarifies why debates often seem frustrating and why people occasionally appear irrational. Their brains aren't malfunctioning; they are simply operating as intended, balancing efficiency with the constraints of biological processing.
How Bias Leads to Polarization
When individual biases play out in social settings, the effects can multiply. In groups like juries, newsrooms, or family discussions, people bring their own prior beliefs and motivations. When faced with ambiguous or mixed evidence, each person tends to interpret it in a way that confirms their existing narrative.
This process can lead to polarization, where groups become more divided rather than finding common ground. It is not just a failure of communication or reasoning but a predictable result of how our brains handle information.
Generational divides can be understood in a similar way. People who have lived through different historical periods have accumulated distinct experiences, which form their priors. They also value different things: security versus freedom, innovation versus stability, independence versus belonging.
When they encounter new events or social changes, their brains weigh this evidence through those motivational filters. What one generation sees as progress, another might perceive as loss—not because either side refuses to learn, but because they learn through different internal thresholds.
The same logic applies to the legal system itself. Courts rely on the idea that impartial judges and juries can objectively process evidence to reach a fair verdict. Yet physiological constraints make perfect impartiality impossible.
Early cases in a judge’s career can subtly shape the way later cases are interpreted, and even the order in which evidence is presented in a trial can affect outcomes. First impressions are not merely psychological—they shape the neural encoding of subsequent information. This means that verdicts reflect not only the facts but also the brain’s structure for interpreting them.
Beyond the courtroom or the ballot box, this mechanism can explain everyday phenomena such as information avoidance, selective attention, and the tendency to overweight particular kinds of evidence when making health, investment, or consumption decisions. We might read an article that confirms our lifestyle choices more carefully than one that challenges them, or interpret financial news differently depending on whether we are risk-averse or optimistic. Our beliefs and preferences are intertwined because the brain circuits that compute value and interpret evidence are intertwined.
Is It Possible to Become More Impartial?
Recognizing this connection does not mean we are doomed to bias. On the contrary, understanding the neurobiology of belief gives us a path toward designing better environments for collective decision-making.
If we accept that all information is filtered, we can create structures—educational, institutional, and social—that account for these natural constraints rather than pretending they do not exist. Encouraging exposure to diverse viewpoints, varying the order in which information is presented, or designing deliberation rules that slow down early anchoring can help offset the brain’s built-in tendencies.
