Self Esteem and Self Worth


Self esteem is the way you value yourself. It’s not about being perfect or always succeeding. Instead, it’s about recognising your own worth and treating yourself with kindness and respect. When self esteem is low, you might focus on your flaws or mistakes and ignore your strengths. This can lead to feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.


Recognising this is the first step. You don’t have to believe every negative thought you have about yourself. Those thoughts are often distorted and don’t reflect reality. Understanding this helps you create space to build a healthier self view.


Challenge Negative Self-Talk

One of the biggest obstacles to healthy self esteem is negative self talk. This is the inner voice that tells you things like “I’m not good enough,” “I always mess up,” or “Nobody likes me.” These thoughts can feel automatic and true, but they are often exaggerated or false.

  • Is this thought based on facts or feelings?

Each time you meet a goal, you prove to yourself that you are capable. This builds confidence step by step.


Practice Self Care and Kindness

Taking care of your body and mind sends a message that you matter. Self care can include:


  • Getting enough sleep

  • Eating nourishing foods

  • Moving your body in ways you enjoy

  • Taking breaks when you feel overwhelmed


Along with physical care, practice kindness toward yourself. When you make a mistake, avoid harsh criticism. Instead, talk to yourself as you would to a good friend. This helps build a foundation of self-respect.


Focus on Your Strengths and Achievements

It’s easy to overlook your strengths when you’re caught in self doubt. Make a list of your positive qualities, skills, and past achievements. These can be big or small, such as:


  • Being a good listener

  • Completing a project at work or school

  • Showing kindness to others


Review this list regularly, especially when you feel low. Reminding yourself of your strengths helps balance negative thoughts.


Seek Professional Support if Needed

Sometimes, low self esteem is linked to deeper issues like anxiety, depression, or past trauma. If you find it hard to improve your self view on your own, consider reaching out to a mental health professional. Therapy can provide tools and support to help you build confidence and heal.


Building self esteem is a process that takes time and effort. By challenging negative thoughts, setting small goals, surrounding yourself with support, and practising kindness, you can start to see yourself in a more positive light. Remember, your worth is not defined by others’ opinions or your mistakes. It comes from recognising your unique value and treating yourself with respect.
